Who OWNS Your Career?

Career Ownership:  Are You F.R.E.D. ?

Consider this:  Have you ever been “DOWNSIZED” from a career job? If so, …

How much say did you have in the matter?  If you had no control over the fate of your job, …

… – then SOMEONE ELSE OWNED your career destiny at that time.

Think about it:

If your (former?) employer, or anyone – other than yourself – currently controls your career status, then perhaps you’re ready to consider Your Career Revolution!

Of course, getting unceremoniously downsized is just ONE example of abdicating Career Ownership. YOUR situation may be quite different.

Nearly every professional and executive I work with falls into one (or more) of four (4) career status categories, and NONE of these should be a surprise. They’re all some form of … F.R.E.D. (“FRED”) :

Four famous Freds

FRED Flintstone, FRED Rogers, FRED Smith, & FRED Haise each represent different career status situations.

Are You FRED?

Well, ask yourself if YOU fall into one of these F.R.E.D. categories:

Frustrated: Someone frustrated with their job, hours, company, career path, boss, travel, industry, paycheck, etc. (stuck in a rut, tired of politics, wants more control) Example: frustrated Fred Flintstone, the subject of my next post.

Retired: (recently) from Corporate / Military Careers: Someone recently retired (or about to) and is looking to do something that generates income AND builds equity, with fewer hours invested than their past career (wants vocational flexibility – on their own terms!)  Like Fred Rogers

Entrepreneurial: (or Seeking Additional Income): Someone seeking additional or alternative income through an equity building venture. This includes investors. May be passive or active in the new venture; absentee or fully engaged, or anywhere along that spectrum. Consider Fred Smith

Downsized: Someone who has been downsized from a corporate position, prefers to control their geographic location, and doesn’t want to take a step back financially. This also includes people over 50 having difficulty finding new, comparable employment – and even their college-grad children. Remember Fred Haise

Ready to Act … NOW?

Do any of the above categories describe your career status? If so, you’re NOT alone! And, there ARE practical and specific steps you can take RIGHT NOW … to improve your position:

Step 1 – Watch this short video that describes my complimentary (free) service, and explains HOW I help professionals and executives through career transition:

Step 2 – Schedule a ~20 minute chat on my calendar. Again, my services are complimentary, much like an executive recruiter. Consider THIS possibility:

If you’re FRED, then you owe it to yourself to see what else is out there!

Next time, we’ll look more closely at the Frustrated element of FRED (Fred Flintstone!), and why it drives professionals to take ownership of their careers.
