From Quotable Quotes to Profound Thoughts

I LOVE quotes!

Inspiring quotes. Challenging quotes. Bold nuggets of Truth. Fictional sayings. Mis-attributed quotes (quite common!). Punch lines. Movie one-liners. Book quotes. Profound quotes. Thought-provoking quotes. Biblical quotes. FUNNY quotes! Analogy quotes. Quotes about leadership, business, life, and yes: Career growth!

Brevity in communication can be remarkably effective. Today, I’ll limit commentary, and just share a variety of quotes / sayings / one-liners I that made an impression on me (but not necessarily agree with), with one underlying principle to keep in mind:

Quotes intended to inspire can lead to profound thinking. However, until thoughts advance to actions, you’ve merely gained information; WELL short of applied knowledge … OR wisdom.

Here goes a potpourri of quotable quotes!

Career Growth & Opportunity

Richard Branson comes to mind, as do others:

Do YOU have a favorite?

Business, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship

Ah, … Henry Ford:

Don’t think Henry Ford EVER followed market research: “Any color you want, as long as it’s black.”

Leadership & Inspiration

Great orators are remembered for their great quotes. Any “C” level American History student can not only FINISH these familiar quotes, but tell you what American leader said them, and perhaps when and where:

“Ask not what your country …. ” “Mr. Gorbachev, …” “I have a dream.” “That’s one small step for man …” “Four score and seven years ago, …” “The only thing we have to fear is …” “Speak softly, and carry a … ” Damn the torpedoes, full … “

More broadly, the past hundred years or so, few global leaders inspired like Sir Winston Churchill:

I could write 10 more editions on quotes BY leaders and ABOUT leadership.

A Few Axioms for Living:

Random … AND Broad …

Narrowing my list of these from a thousand to a hundred was the hardest part.

And, Just for FUN …

“I never said most of the things I said.” -Yogi Berra

“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” -Groucho Marx

“Get your facts first. Then distort them as you please.” -Mark Twain

“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them – and you have their shoes.” -Jack Handey

“I don’t like country music, but I don’t mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means ‘put down’.” -Bob Newhart

“I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, … with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.” -President John F. Kennedy at a dinner for Nobel Prize winners.

“Always go to other people’s funerals. Otherwise, they won’t come to yours.” -Yogi Berra

In closing, …

Fins UP!

The Summer months are fast approaching, and I’ll miss my annual Parrothead event treks of years past. Nevertheless, here’s a quote to end on, from the late, great American poet, James William Buffett:

Finally, I wish ALL who read this a pleasant – and meaningful – Memorial Day weekend!

To your success!
